Description
🚢 Epic Journey 24×36 by Chris DeRubeis
An Epic Battle Has Begun…
The video opens in silence. No moon. Just clouds—ominous and swirling. Suddenly—
BOOM.
Cannon fire splits the silence. A distant battle rages beyond the horizon. Explosions ignite the night sky. Then, breaking through the storm…
A lone pirate ship.
It sails from the ashes.
Through fire.
Through smoke.
Toward us.
The “Yo Ho” chant echoes from the deep as the vessel glides across black water. Behind it, the cosmic moon begins to rise—blue, full, alive. The ship turns, stows its sails, and slows… drifting into final frame:

🌌 The Cosmic Voyage Begins
Before you is not just a ship.
It is a survivor. A rogue. A myth stitched into stardust.
Painted on fire-blasted aluminum by Chris DeRubeis, “Epic Journey” is a moment where the surreal and the celestial collide. The moon glows like an ancient god. The sea pulses with alien light. The sky fractures into galaxies.
And in the center—
A lone galleon. Still. Stoic. Unstoppable.
Its silhouette stands like a blade against the infinite.
Its sails now lowered, its message clear:
You have begun your Epic Journey in battle. I made it through. And I am coming for everything.

About the Artist
Chris DeRubeis (born 1978 in Santa Clarita, California) is the American artist and founder of the visual style he calls “Abstract Sensualism®”—a dazzling fusion of painting and sculpture that explores light, texture, and movement via metals and mixed media derubeisfineart.com+14derubeisfineart.com+14derubeisfineart.com+14.
Early Life & Origins
DeRubeis displayed artistic talent early on—his grandfather gifted him his first airbrush at age 11 and predicted he would become the artist he himself had always dreamed of being derubeisfineart.com+1. As a teenager, he earned money airbrushing shirts (even managing a store at Six Flags) and customized motorcycles to fund his education at Pasadena Art Center and Associates in Art, Sherman Oaks derubeisfineart.com+1.
Developing a Signature Style
While airbrushing and grinding metal at a custom motorcycle shop, DeRubeis discovered that exposed aluminum could produce striking patterns when etched or treated with chemicals—and that it reflected light in unpredictable, beautiful ways Art Brokerage+14derubeisfineart.com+14Park West Gallery+14. Experimenting with pigments, power tools, fire, water, and freezing, he began crafting works that almost felt alive with energy: organic, flowing forms rendered in shimmering surfaces artgroupink.com+15Park West Gallery+15qart.com+15.
Rise to Recognition & David Smith Partnership
In 2005, DeRubeis received nominations in the “Mixed Media” and “New Movement” categories at the First Annual Fine Art Awards in Las Vegas, winning the MUSE Award in New Movement at age 27, which he dedicated to his recently deceased grandfather Art Brokerage+10qart.com+10Art Brokerage+10.
In 2007, he was discovered by renowned art publisher David Smith, who saw his innovative work at an art expo and recognized its potential. Smith remarked DeRubeis was “too far ahead of his time” and took him under his wing, founding DeRubeis Fine Art of Metal and helping bring his work to galleries worldwide. Smith’s support from 2008 onwards helped elevate DeRubeis’s career dramatically milangallery.com+3artgroupink.com+3milangallery.com+3.
Career & Legacy
DeRubeis’s artworks are unique—no two are alike—even when titles repeat, the grinding patterns and chemical reactions differ each time Park West Gallery. His works have appeared on TV networks like DIY and HGTV, and since 2010 he’s operated signature galleries—including locations in Key West and Las Vegas
